Via usb controllers are known to have problems :(

If you insert a ehci pci card in the machine, does the same problem
happen?

Not possible, the one PCI slot is occupied with a gigabit network card. We can't lose the gigabit so even if a pci ehci card solved the issue, we get a different problem, no gigabit and yes we absolutely need the gigabit.

And, what are the kernel log messages that happen when the disconnect
happens (if you enable CONFIG_USB_DEBUG, it would help.)

Well this is strange, I've turned kernel debug and usb debug on and added the logging deamons to capture the logs. Now the most troublesome box which previous would fault in 4-36 hours has been running for 4 days with no problems. Smells like a race condition. I'm going to let it run for a few more days, then revert back to original configuration to cross-check the sporatic disconnect.

Comments are welcome.

Thanks
Scott
