The key mapping is done in the hardware.  After you've got it plugged
in, hold Start+Select+Up for 3 seconds and the hardware will map your
axis to buttons.  It's possible some very old ones may not be able to
do this, but I've been playing Stepmania with mine and have no trouble
with combos.
