Patches should apply-able with -p1 when applied at the top-level of
the source tree.  I know that SVN doesn't do this and it's a big PITA.
I've switched to git and found that 

  a) it's a lot better suited to kernel hacking since it handles
     branching properly,
  b) it has the right sorts of commands for sharing patches.
