This was with the latest stable, 2.6.17.2.

I can't believe I left out the kernel version information :P

Ok, 1 and 2 pl2303 seem to work, but if I use 3 pl2303 it already gives
errors. Even simply inserting the third pl2303 with the hub connected
failed at one point. Disconnecting and re-connecting the hub with the 3
devices already plugged on the hub seems to work, though.

I've removed the ftdi from the equation for now to simplify testing.

My first guess was that this had something to do with split
transactions. A problem similar to what's reported here:

http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-usb-devel&m=112144353807629&w=4

I'm CC'ing Dan Streetman to see if he found out something that could
help on this thread.

I don't have real hardware that can be used to debug this. I did turn on
usb monitor and debugfs. Would a trace from usbmon help?

Anyway, I'll be testing with the latest 2.6.17-git21 and there is a new
USB_EHCI_TT_NEWSCHED that seems to address exactly this problem. I'll
report again after the tests.
