Thanks for the quick answer, even if it's not the one I want to hear. :-/

That link mentions libusb and USB_PORT_FEAT_POWER.

Am I right in assuming that
        echo -n 2 >/sys/bus/usb/WHEREVER_THE_HUB_IS/power/state
would do essentially the same thing, these days?
