Okay, this looks good.  Give me some time to go over your logs and run
some tests on my own machine.  I'll get back to you...

Incidentally, it's clear from the logs that the problem lies in the HP
scanner.  There are at least two errors that show up.  One is the "missing
must-be-set bit" in the lsusb report and the other is the -104 timeout
error in the log.  These occur under both 2.6.15 and 2.6.18; for some
unknown reason the device recovers with the earlier kernel and crashes
with the later kernel.  With luck I'll be able to guess the reason and 
change the 2.6.18 driver appropriately.
