Oleg, I'm just a messenger. I'm just saying that I've encountered these things before, and I've asked the gcc experts, and I've told you what they say. If you think it's wrong, *please* go and ask the gcc people yourself, and then come back and tell us what they say. This is one of those subjects where, just as you think you almost understand it all, another huge level of complexity is revealed. As it happens, I was convinced by what the gcc people said. But even if you're right and it is a bug, it's a bug that we will have to live with since we can't say "you need gcc >4.x.y to compile linux-usb". Concerning optimisation, there is a danger that the problem can be optimised away in small test cases. I think that if you follow the thread that I linked to before you'll see exactly how the examples were compiled.
