I should have mentioned that g_serial works fine in CDC-ACM mode when
connected to a linux host.  Linux must forge ahead when the status is
missing whereas usbser.sys just hangs for awhile and then gives up.

I'd like to but I don't want to cross post.  If this thread is fruitful,
