Hullo all,
I was looking for a USB modem that I could use under Linux for a while, till
I saw a company selling a "Jetway Hardware USB Modem" for about 20 quid
(which sounded pretty good price). I figured "Well, if it is a hardware
modem,
surely it must work on Linux, even if it isn't on the list of ones that
work",
so I bought it...
Well, it finally arrived today, and I set about seeing if I could get
Linux
to recognise it. I got the usb-uhci module installed, mounted the usbdevfs
thing,
and mounted the acm module. I plugged in the modem.
On screen appeared:
usb.c: USB new device connect, assigned device number 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x572/0x1232) is not claimed by any active
driver.
(well that was recorded in dmesg, something similar was prolly on screen).
After much poking about, not being quite sure what to do (as I can find NO
USB docs with my 2.2.19 kernel), I plugged in the old serial modem and
looked
about the linux sites. I noticed the only other reference to a CONEXANT
(which
is what the modem is inside, apparently) modem, was from someone who
couldn't
get it to work.
Looking further, it sounds like this isn't an ACM modem, but wants a vendor
specific driver. So, does anyone know if any of the existing drivers support
this modem? I understand that Rockwell (other name of Conexant) chips on
serial modems only use the software drivers to do compression, and work OK
(but slower) if you use them as normal serial modems. Perhaps something
similar
might apply to their USB chips?
