Well, I bought the damn thing, and it all works! Thanks a lot to all who responded. Just in case anyone is looking for the same product, I'm using: Startech IDECASE525U ($80 if you look hard enough) with an HP 9100+ CDRW. I upgraded the firmware of the SL11R-IDE chip to 2.6c as recommended by ScanLogic and other Linux users.
