when I first got the modem I was using the usb-uhci driver, but have since (about 2 months ago) switched to using the uhci driver (and noticed signifigant speed increase), but yes I do have a Via Chipset, as well as Broadcom design.
On a side note, I have been having problems with my burner (IDE, not scsi) which I just noticed dies at the same time, so my current guess is that the burner is dying so I removed it and am currently waiting to see if that was causing any weird reprecussions, like agravating this problem.
