When I attempt to mount a Transcend 256Mb flashdrive,
I get these messages:

# after mount -t vfat (or msdos) /dev/sdb (or sdb1) /mnt/usbflash

SCSI device (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL REQUEST.
SCSI device sdb: 506400 512-byte hdwr sectors (259 MB)
    sdb: Write Protect is off
     sdb: I/O error: dev 08:10, sector 0
     unable to read partition table
SCSI device (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL REQUEST.
    Device busy for revalidation (usage=1)
     I/O error: dev 08:10, sector 0
    FAT bread failed

The drive works fine with Windows2000 without
additional drivers (separate machine). I've repartitioned
and reformatted the drive on the w2000 machine - no change.
Cfdisk also tells me it cannot read the partition table.

Any suggestions?

I'm new to Linux, old to computers.
