Hey jim which module are you using?
usbdnet or the other one(forget now is early) you should try to download the latest usbdnet kernel patch you can find the link to the latest patch here. http://www.ruault.com/Zaurus/ethernet-over-usb-howto.html it works great for me. I set it up with hotplug and it works wonders.
