Make sure you have genric scsi support and usb-storage modules loaded.  I also 
have a CF/SM reader (but from SanDisk).  It's properly detected and setup with RedHat 
7.3, but it only attempts to read the 2nd slot (Compact Flash) and not the first slot 
(SmartMedia) like I need.  I'm using usb-ohci if that helps at all.  Good luck, and 
keep me posted of anything you find out.
