Hi!
I have a "FreeCom Drive In Kit", with a harddisk in, and i got some troubles
kernel 2.4.20-pre8-ac3
hotplug 2002_08_26
usb2 card with NEC chipset (printer works on that card)
devfs mounted on /dev

a view days ago when i first installed it looked all fine:
(from /var/log/messages)

kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:08.2-4, assigned address 2
/etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup usb-storage for USB product 7ab/fc03/1110
kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage
kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
kernel: /dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0: p1 < p5 >
kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered.

on unplugging:

kernel: usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:08.2-4 address 2

plug in again:
kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:08.2-4, assigned address 3
/etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup usb-storage for USB product 7ab/fc03/1110

i needed to modprobe sd_mod to get access to the partitions, unplug did not
unregister the devices, but except from that things worked

for some reason now ( 2 days later ) things don't work any more, and i cannot
find out why.
when i plug in the device it says:
[...]
kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage
kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

and then it stops - the device does not get created, lsmod says that
usb-storage is still initializing, and it stays that way eternally.
i also tried with a older 2.4.20-pre7-ac3, and with a 2.5.39, but no
difference

hardware is fine, i in some other os it works

Any ideas?
What can i do?
What hardware do you recommend for external ide?

Wolfgang
