I see that there is a message during startup indicating that the PCI controller is not able to setup interrupts.
I think that this is the type of error mentioned in the FAQ. I upgraded the BIOS and turned of Plug-and-Play with no change in the behavior. The appropriate thing I think is to take this issue to the kernel mail list. Next time I'll RTFM more thoroughly.
