it appears that there are two FAT tables on FAT filesystems. Up until
VFAT/FAT32, the first one (at sector 2) is the primary, and the second
one (located where???) is the secondary. Starting with FAT32, the
either of the two copies can be designated as primary. So maybe the
problem is that somehow on this card the FAT not at sector 2 is
designated as primary and thus gets the files from the camera/on
windows, but Linux only looks at the sector 2 FAT???

When I get home tonight I'm going to try looking at the card using
mtools instead of explicitly mounting it (if I can set that up) and
see what they report.

Cam> Did you have a fstab entry with auto in it?

My fstab has vfat selected explicitly currently, although I
experimented with other options and did try hand-mounting as well. I
don't recall the exact results with each filesystem type, but the
overall affect was either it didn't work at all or I had the same
problem I described earlier.

This does seem likely. Anybody have positive experiences with some
other brand of large (>= 256MB) flash cards in these circumstances?
Which? I don't have a problem just buying another card if this is the
problem, since I have another use for the current one anyway, but I
would prefer to get something that works rather than learning by trial
and error...
