Heh, upgrading the firmware *did* make a difference; I
could read /proc/bus/usb/devices OK. However, I then
discovered that the new firmware prevented the device
from being recognised if it were "cold-plugged". And
after a few hours of uptime it crashed too.

I have other similiar-purposed USB devices that work
just fine with these UHCI USB 1.0 ports; I find it
hard to believe that this device *needs* USB 1.0. It
is not a hub...
