Thanks for the assistance.  Using the "mct_u232" module worked for me:
 
# insmod usbcore
# insmod usb-uhci
# insmod usbserial
# insmod mct_u232
 
The device appeared at /dev/usb/ttyUSB0.
 
I've updated http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/ to reflect my success with this device.  
Hopefully it will help someone else along the way.  :)

        Likely the name of the module got changed in the last year, which is the last
        time I got motivated to write any documentation. However you almost certainly
        don't want to do that for this device.  Plus you have a typo:
        s/usbserial/usbserial.o :)
