Dear Peter and others, it is encouraging to know that Peter's pendrive started working after an upgrade to SuSE Linux 8.1. Unfortunately, I can not hope for the same resolution, since I am already using SuSE Linux 8.1.
My situation is the following. I have a Buslink USB "busdrive" and I am using Suse Linux 8.1. When I do cat /proc/scsi/scsi or cat /proc/scsi/usb-storage-0/0 I get the expected messages. When, however, I try to mount the device /dev/sda1 (or /dec/sda4) I get "/dev/sda1 is not a valid block device" In my /var/log/messages, the following items seem to be relevant: Dec 3 01:43:57 jo kernel: USB Mass Storage device found at 7 Dec 3 01:43:57 jo kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered. Dec 3 01:43:57 jo insmod: Using /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/usb/storage/usb-storage.o Dec 3 01:43:57 jo insmod: Symbol version prefix '' Dec 3 01:44:00 jo kernel: sg: find_free_slot ...<7>sg: initializing sg_major_array ...<4>sg: allocated major 21 Dec 3 01:44:00 jo kernel: sg: ... found 15:00 Dec 3 01:44:00 jo kernel: sg_attach: dev0=(21:0) Dec 3 01:44:11 jo modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-8 Dec 3 01:44:14 jo /etc/hotplug/usb.agent[865]: Can't ignore signal CHLD, forcing to default." In my /etc/modules.conf I have alias block-major-8 sd_mod This may be a problem, since I do not seem to find "sd_mod" anywhere in /lib/modules. I have seen on the web, that some people put just "alias block-major-8 off" to suppress the complaint about not finding block-major-8, but this may be a bad idea if "sd_mod" is needed to create /dev/sda*. It may be relevant that I had to put the module usb-storage into initrd, since otherwise my boot process hangs at the moment when hotplugging services are loaded. Somewhere I read a hint that one may want to put scsi support into the initrd as well, but I do not know how to do that. I do have some scsi support, since I am able to mount my usb cdrw drive as /dev/sr0. I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone could give. You, Peter, could perhaps tell me, what is the status of "block-major-8" in your /etc/modules.conf Best regards, Gabor PS. At some point I also recompiled my kernel to make it smaller, but booting with the original Suse kernel does not seem to make a difference in this issue. When I compiled the new smaller kernel, I left the modules as they were -- I did not reinstall those, so they should be as they came with the distribution.
