In principle, this list can help to make it work with the USB kernel driver. Is it this what you want to do? However, the scanner is not supported by the SANE userland drivers currently, so getting it detected by the kernel won't help much. There is some work done and a little test program at http://home.kabelfoon.nl/~bertrik/hp5400/index.html . You are invited to help writing a driver.
