If it isn't obvious by now, USB is a pretty complex protocol. If you think your first driver can work in only 10 hours, when you don't have the specs for the device, you are on drugs.
I will mail you (off list, its a bit large) a simple userspace driver that works with logitech mice, and libusb. That should give you a model. For reference, it took me about 15 hours to get it to this stage, and I had the specs, and I've done this before. Even with my reference stuff, you still need to read and understand the USB specs (at least Chapter 9), and you probably need the specs for your cash drawer to avoid a lot of reverse engineering. I'd chase the specs first.
