I can't say whether I had exactly that problem, it's been too long
and I fixed it too quickly to be really clear in my recollection of
the details of the symptoms. Certainly I had a slow hard drive and
made it quick.

I use a Pocketec Pockey USB 2.0 30GB hard drive, on the UHCI
hub built in to my Sony Vaio Picturebook PCG-C1VPK, running Red
Hat 7.3 with kernel 2.4.19. Things work, but were annoyingly
slow until I reformatted the drive with ext3. It's at least as
appropriately tolerant of abrupt disconnects as VFAT, and far far
better performing.

Of course I don't mind the fact that I lost the ability to use my
drive as interchange media with other OSes. VFAT's performance may
stink on ice, but it is pretty widely readable.

USB 2.0 may make the nightmarish performance of VFAT hurt less, but
ext3 is so quick I don't mind my current performance.
