Hey, thanks for everybody's help on this. It took me two weeks to figure
out the hard drive in the USB enclosure was kaputz. SCHISH!!
Once I replaced the drive, and reverted back to the stock SuSE 8.1
kernel and modules, everything worked perfectly as expected (and dmesg
clearly told me what device I had to mount!)
