For a contrasting experience, I've had fine success with a couple of large drives, doing writes that include large files. First thing I do is newfs them to ext3. Andreas and I exchanged notes, and it appears that the difference is that I let my system stand otherwise idle when it's backing up to my USB drives, whereas Andreas wants to keep his system busy doing other things at the same time. -Bennett
