Well, I finally broke down and tried the device under OS X and Windows. Turns out the stick itself was broken. I don't know how or why, the light still lights up, but it just doesn't show up under any OS. I took it apart and there isn't any visible damage, but then again all the parts are extremely small.
Solves that problem.
