Maybe you can run "lsmod" to see if usbcore and usb-uhci loaded into kernel or not.

If not, you can try to put 

alias usb-controller usb-uhci

into /etc/modules.conf file so that it is loaded next time the machine boots. You can 
also run modprobe usb-uhci to load driver module into running kernel.

BTW, usb-uhci can be usb-ohci for some USB controllers I think.

It could be that usbfs isn't mounted (on /proc/bus/usb).
