OK, I played a little bit more with my F5U234 hub. Earlier I had reported that I got these messages when plugging it in: hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.7-7, assigned address 2 usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=2 (error=-71) hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.7-7, assigned address 3 usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=3 (error=-71)
Following Belkin's claims that it could run without a power supply in most cases, I had plugged it in without the power supply. One more detail is that I had plugged it into the front of my case, which has two usb connectors in addition to the three in the back.
I repeated the setup with the power supply and the hub connected to the back connectors of my case and I got this: hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.7-2, assigned address 6 hub.c: USB hub found hub.c: 4 ports detected
The first time I plugged it in, it didn't actually work when I tried to hook things up to it. After having rebooted, everything went fine however, and this hub is now functional.
Go figure ...
