the symptoms you describe are exactly what I experienced with a Genesys
chipset. I didn't find a solution and returned my drive ... Now I have a
drive with a Prolific chipset which is working nicely!

Since the path would have to come from Genesys (I assume it's not so
much a Linux problem) I wouldn't wait. Just return the drive and look
for a better one. You could have a look at

to find a suitable drive and if you have the time, please file a record
concerning the bad one so others can use this info in the future.
