I believe minicom will always send modem control strings in its
default configuration, so if you haven't gone through and cleared
those out it could be a problem.

An even more basic option is "microcom" (see freshmeat), which
is somewhat like Sun's "tip" in that it provides only the bare
essentials for connectivity and otherwise stays out of your way.
