I'll bet there is some documentation on this somewhere, but I can't
find it. This isn't really a Linux-USB question, more just a USB
question, but all the same I'd really appreciate a pointer to
information on the following question:

First, some background.

I've got a class implementing a USB to DMX-512 convertor for
theatrical applications. DMX-512 is a standard for controlling light
dimmers; the basic idea is that it keeps sending intensity levels to
512 dimmers over a serial line, over and over.

The gadget we're building uses a little microprocessor to store the
intensity levels; the host updates the levels as needed and the
microprocessor keeps shipping the levels out.

The question comes when it's time for this device to identify itself
to the host. The manufacturer might best be described as "homebrew"
and the device class as "oddball." Are there manufacturer IDs that
are reserved so that I can be confident that if I pick it, I won't be
landing on something that will later be assigned to a real
manufacturer? Similarly, are there class IDs that I can be confident
won't be assigned to a real class someday? Or do I just have to grab
one and hope for the best? I guess I'm hoping for something analogous
to the 192.168.x.x IP addresses...
