Sorry, but this is not "the usual problem".  And a hardware defect is not
so unlikely as you think.

You are right, so right... It may be the case that the HD is not ok. I'm currently investigate on that point. At least to me it was clear (!) that this could not be the case... :-((


I comment on that later.

A (possible) different problem: The system does not boot if the usb device
is
connected. It hangs during booting. I even cannot use the power off
button, only
reset works (no sysreq or num lock).


Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make sure that Legacy USB support is turned off in the computer's BIOS.

That was the point. Disabling the USB stuff made booting with the attached device work.
