Problem solved; I mis-followed the instructions of others who mis-understood what was happening. Safe_serial was not involved in the least.
FWIW, to connect to the HP49G+, here's what you need to do - Compile in USB_SERIAL and USB_SERIAL_GENERIC as a module - Install the XModem tools (http://www.ohse.de/uwe/software/lrzsz.html) - Put the target variable on the calculator's stack (e.g. 'test') - In linux, lsx myfile < /dev/ttyUSB0 > /dev/ttyUSB0 - On the calculator, XRECV
