you should also give libhid a try. It's a userland lib, based
on libusb, and although not yet completed, it should suit
your needs.

Note that libhid has a driver unbind feature which
allows to unbind the device from hiddev...

@Stephen: did you received my mail (about a month ago) to add an
entry on linux-usb website for libhid in the Tools/API section (and
also to update the USB UPS entry?
