Seems you are in a very bad position if you are unable to change kernels. I'd try to figure out what changes were make (you should be able to do a diff with the actual kernel from kernel.org). 2.4.20 is over 2 years old. I'm sure many bugs have been fixed in that time (even if you go to 2.4.30).
