You can try running at full speed instead of high speed by doing

        rmmod ehci-hcd

before plugging in the drive.

You can try turning on USB Mass Storage verbose debugging in the kernel 
configuration and posting the system log.  Maybe something in there will 
indicate why this problem is occurring.

You can even try getting an add-on USB controller card to use instead of
the controller in your computer.  Some add-on cards (like those with
chipsets by NEC) are often of higher quality than the components on
motherboards.
