Your problem is that you're using an old kernel.  With 2.6.10, usb-storage 
won't drive a normal storage device at all if ub is configured, whether ub 
has been modprobed or not.  If you don't want to update to 2.6.12, you 
will have to rebuild your 2.6.10 kernel after disabling the ub driver in 
the configuration.
