I strongly suspect that you will not be able to get this device to work 
with a standard 2.4 kernel.  Somewhere I have a patch stashed away that 
might do the job, but it's never going to be a regular part of 2.4.

You should try out 2.6, even if you don't want to use it normally.  
Probably the camera will work with no problems.  As regards the screeching
sound, you ought to file a bug report about it.  After all, it should be
fixable -- but the developers won't even know the problem exists unless
users like you report it!
