Greetings, For some months now I've been using BackupPC to backup a couple of linux machines to an external USB hard drive. The machine hosting BackupPC runs Mandrake/Mandriva linux. Using kernels up through 2.6.12 results in messages such as:
Oct 30 18:45:41 osage kernel: SCSI error : <1 0 0 0> return code = 0x70000 Oct 30 18:45:41 osage kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 93068569 Oct 30 18:45:41 osage kernel: ReiserFS: sda1: warning: vs-13070: reiserfs_read_locked_inode: i/o failure occurred trying to find stat data of [3846211 3848171 0x0 SD] Oct 30 18:45:41 osage kernel: SCSI error : <1 0 0 0> return code = 0x70000 Oct 30 18:45:41 osage kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 15204777 Oct 30 18:45:41 osage kernel: ReiserFS: sda1: warning: zam-7001: io error in reiserfs_find_entry Oct 30 18:45:41 osage kernel: SCSI error : <1 0 0 0> return code = 0x70000 Oct 30 18:45:41 osage kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 87829921 the backup process is typically hung (in D state) and the workstation that needs to be rebooted to clear the problem. Efforts to build/use a newer 2.6.13 kernel were unsuccessful. I learned last week that the failures were due to my ATI video card and Mandriva's use of dkms for handling its drivers. Now I have a 2.6.14 kernel running and am on to a new problem. Friday night I was running a backup and, AFAICT, Saturday morning the workstation was dead. A hardware reset corrected the problem. The system log's last entry was at 05:01. Saturday night backup was running again and Sunday moring the workstation was dead. Again, a hardare reset worked fine. This time the system log's last entry was about 01:30. Sunday night backup was not running and the workstation is fine this morning. Given past USB problems, I suspect present USB problems. Any suggestions how to ferret them out. Regards, David P.S. I've rebuilt the kernel with "CONFIG_USB_DEBUG=y" and will have more info tomorrow -- either a success or a failure :-> ------------------------------------------------------- SF.Net email is sponsored by: Tame your development challenges with Apache's Geronimo App Server.
