Could be. Apparently a lot of USB device controllers are brittle -- they work okay on some computers but not on others. Or maybe it's the USB host controllers in the computers, or maybe both; it's hard to tell without a USB analyzer. Genesys Logic's chips have been known to be troublesome in the past, although now they seem to be doing better. What are the symptoms of your current failures? What shows up in the dmesg output?
