Thanks for the help and info.
I hadn't been unmounting before removing. Too used to the MS plug and pull
world I guess (though I guess it causes problems there as well) and i
figured that the auto mounting would also do auto dismounting (not very well
thought through I know....). I will make sure that in the future I do and
that its included in the backup script.
Wow. Not used to learning so much on a firday afternoon.... Time to head
home. Thanks all for the help.

With the sync option it writes everything you send before writing the next
thing. This is really inefficent which is why it is so slow. The risk is
that if you do just pull the cable you can loose data that is hanging
around in a memory cache. If you umount (you always do that, right?) the
filesystem it will do a sync before the prompt returns, then you can pull
the cable out.
