I'm already using "modprobe usbserial vendor=0x6547 product=0x0232" as suggested. The only difference is that I'm entering the arguments on
the kernel command line since I'm not using modules.

I was overly optimistic,
after complete reading: the last? posting on that page describes the same 
problem.
