(sorry about the last message; i forgot to disable rich text formatting)

I'm relatively new to Linux; still exploring to see what can be done
with it. I had been successful in setting up a firewall plus web
server, but cannot get a usb webcam to work under the box, even after
three days of researching. I have read that it can be tricky at times;
though I must admit that I did not expect it to be this difficult.

My (9-year-old, according to the warranty stickers) box:
Pentium MMX 200MHz
32 MB of SDRAM
SiS Chipset
S3 ViRGE VGA Card

Debian:
Linux azure 2.4.27-2-586tsc #1 Wed Nov 30 21:29:45 JST 2005 i586 GNU/Linux

Debian seemed to be misunderstanding something. My webcam definitely
is not a speaker. It does, however, have a built-in mic, though I
never managed to get that to work, even under Windows. From what I
read on forums and mailing lists, the OS is supposed to detect and
identify it as a video device. It does not even attempt to load ov511
in my case.

I tested the webcam under Windows. It is not broken. The green light
is on when it is plugged into the Linux box. The USB interface, though
aged and rusty, is not broken either. I tested it with a mouse and it
worked flawlessly.

I am lost. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
