Well, turns out to be simple: the proper host controller, uhci_hcd in  
my case, wasn't loaded for some obscure reason, even though I  
specifally set it in "make menuconfig". And the reason for not  
finding out sooner: the box runs headless and most relevant error  
messages indicating usb loading problems weren't repeated from the  
console in "dmesg"'s output :(

After carefully hand-crafting a kernel config based on a "known good"  
2.6.16.11 debian config, things started to work automagically as it  
now did load uhci_hcd.

Did all the other things you mentioned, distro is debain. I'll read  
up on initramfs as I haven't read about that whilst discovering all  
about USB and kernel series 2.6.x ;)
