Some other folks (including vsync) had reported the same problem
I've been seeing: it detects devices attached to the root hub,
but never seems to be able to talk to them ... even well enough
to assign a device address, much less figure out what kind of
device got added to the bus.
Scanning the list archives for the past few months I've noticed
a fair number of such reports. Some are less consistent than
this one with the NEC controller. I like to think that's a good
sign, and that with some attention the underlying problem(s) can
at last get uncovered and resolved.
