I have a PIII system with Win98 SE and RH6.1. I'm trying to get Linux to
use my Viking 56K External USB modem.

I've checked the above site as well as the modem compatability table at
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/20000406a.html where this model is listed as
a unknown.

Unfortunately, Viking's tech support couldn't tell me whether it was
possible to use this modem with Linux. That's probably a bad sign, but
they did say it had a Rockwell chipset and their webpage says "Modems
with RPI (Rockwell) drivers work but with reduced performace" so I'm
somewhat optimistic.

Any advice?
