Have you tried echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 0" >/proc/scsi/scsi 
(Assuming you have no other SCSI devices)

My zip drive shows up as /dev/sda4 (Why Iomega uses partition 4 I don't
know).

For me if I transfer a lot of data I get USB lockup and kernel panics. 
This is with 2.3.99pre3.
