I have resolved my problem with the usb-ohci module as mentioned
a week or so ago. I have developed a habit of compiling the linux kernel
with -O6 optimization -- apparently usb-ohci could not deal with this,
at least not with pgcc.
I know that these high optimization levels are not supported (I'm
beginning to think their not even beneficial), and I also have heard
that pgcc has some trouble with the linux kernel. This is the first
time I've had problems though, so I had pretty much forgotten about it.
I switched things back to -O2 and things are working fine (with
pgcc). This may be worth remembering if ever someone else has the same
problem. I will continue to test with pgcc, since a few distributions,
Mandrake probably the most prominent among them, use pgcc to build their
binaries. I'm pretty sure the problems with pgcc have been worked out
now, though.
I do have a few quick questions, if someone will oblige me before
I go back to lurking.
Why is the use of usb and regular joysticks mutually exclusive?
And, since it is this way, why can't the usb joystick use the standard
/dev/jsX device nodes? The snes9x emulator seems to only support these
-- I'm probably going to drop the maintainer a mail.
Lastly, am I mistaken in remembering that documentation for the
HP4200 scanner (actually, the chip inside it) might be available, if
someone were sufficiently savvy enough to attempt it? Is anyone working
on one? I thought I saw this somewhere once, but can't seem to find
it anymore.

I've said it before, but I think this is for real this time -- I'm
going to be quiet for a while until I understand all this a bit better.
But I'll be sure to let you know if I do anything really stupid again.
;-)
