Further to my previous comments, note that anything depending on
/proc/bus/usb is inherently non-portable to any system other than Linux.
Surely it would be better if the application could be moved to *BSD as
an option?

Why not a normal device node /dev/usb/statchg ?

Or perhaps the X.gods should say what they are looking for in a device
change notification system, and then it just gets done? And maybe redone
a few times, but hopefully not too many fundamental interface changes. 

And to clarify: X might not be the only game in town, but is sure is
getting a big turnout...
