After the email of yesterday, I decided to move
something up a notch on a priority list. I can
now autoload USB drivers for most of my devices!
Keyboard needs more work (parsing HID descriptors
may be needed), but it's a good time for other
folk to see it.
Those of you who are interested can go to
http://jusb.sourceforge.net/?selected=usbd
to get the scoop. In brief, there are two things:
- Daemon. One in C will happen someday; I've
provided a "usbd.tar.gz" that needs only an
x86 "java". It's enough to bootstrap the
more important stuff:
- Policy scripts. When the daemon sees devices
added or removed, it runs /etc/usb/policy with
some parameters set in the environment. Driver
specific do a lot of the work.
Making USB do plug'n'play on Linux is work for lots
of hands ... and these scripts are to be a starter.
If you have more or better driver scripts, send them
along and I'll update that page.
Uses "usbdevfs"; get pre7-2 or later unless you use
usb-uhci.
